TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Officials of the Filipino Department of Justice met with Attorney General Agung M. Prasetyo at Attorney General’s Office (AGO) on Wednesday to discuss the fate of death row inmate from the Philippines, Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso.
“The meeting may take two hours,” said Attorney General’s Office spokesman Tony Spontana on Wednesday.
The Filipino delegation arrived at AGO at 10:00 a.m. They will also discuss transnational crime.
Previously, the Filipino Departmeny of Justice found evidence to indict Maria Kristina Sergio and Julius Lacanilao as illegal recruiters of Mary Jane. Both were charged with violating the Philippine’s migrant worker law. Sergio and Lacanilao have no license to recruit migrant workers.
Lacanilao is also said to be the one who introduced Mary Jane to Sergio, who then promised a job as a housemaid in Malaysia to Mary Jane.
Because of Sergio and Lacanilao’s action, Mary Jane was framed to carry narcotics in a suitcase. This led her to be subjected to death sentence.
The Department of Justice’s findings are related to the reports from the Philippines’ Anti-Human Trafficking Division of the National Bureau of Investigation. The reports came from Mary Jane who reported herself as human trafficking victim.
