TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jambi University or Unja will assist their students who had participated in the Ferienjob or internship program in Germany, which was later revealed as an alleged human trafficking front.
Unja Rector Helmi said his side would form a team to conduct further investigations into the internship case in Germany. "And will assist in any form needed for students," he said in his statement on Wednesday, March 27, 2024.
Unja is known to be one of the campuses that dispatched dozens of students to Germany to take part in Ferienjob. The internship program was carried out by PT Sinar Harapan Bangsa (SHB) and CV GEN. The two company heads have been named as suspects along with three other people.
Helmi also ensured that Unja would sever its agreement with PT SHB as the program organizer.
Meanwhile, regarding the involvement of one of Unja's professors in this case, Helmi emphasized that the person concerned is not an active member of Jambi University and is in the process of moving to another university. In the case of Ferienjob, the professor did not represent the university, but PT SHB.
The professor in question is SS who has also been named a suspect. Helmi said Unja respects the ongoing legal process and will honor any binding decision by the court.
How Jambi University participates in Ferienjob
Unja's involvement in Ferienjob began when PT CV GEN and PT SHB offered Ferienjob as a Germany-based international internship program for students for three months from October to December 2023.
In early October 2023, participants from Unja began to depart to Germany in stages. Within a few weeks after the students arrived in Germany, the university received information from the Directorate General of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology that the internship program in Germany was indicated to have violated procedures and urged universities to stop participating in the program.
Unja immediately virtually monitored the students in Germany and confirmed their current conditions. The university did not discover any significant problems and the students returned to Jambi gradually in December 2023.
