TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Commission on Child Protection (KPAI) will file a complaint to Banten’s Provincial Goverment, Tangerang and South Tangerang City Administration for failing to adequately protect children – after it received two reports of child abuse within the space of a week.

“We need to start advocating to raise awareness of the dangers that sexual abuse pose to children in the province of Banten,” said KPAI’s Secretary, Erlinda on Sunday, June 21, 2015. “The local government needs to create an environment that is safe for children to live in.”

Currently, KPAI is currently investigating an incident of sexual abuse of a minor in South Tangerang, as well as another incident in Tangerang City, wherein 12 primary school students in Pabuaran Tumpeng were sexually abused by their school’s principal, Triyono. “These chain of events reflect that Banten is indeed highly prone to incidences of child sexual abuses,” said Erlinda.

Erlinda said that one of the ways through which incidences of sexual abuse could be lowered is by raising awareness among parents about the dangers of child sexual abuses. “Socialisation and education on the matter of child protection, as well as advocating residents to urgently come forward once they hear about an incident of child abuse could help prevent such cases from re-occurring,” she said.
