Australia Invites Indonesia to Cooperate in Combating Drug Trade

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop invited Indonesia to cooperate in eradicating drug trafficking. Bishop claimed that eradicating drug trafficking will be more effective compared to rendering death sentence. "I do not believe that the death penalty has a deterrent [effect] to drug trade," Bishop told reporters in Sydney on Thursday, April 30, 2015.
Bishop said that Australia wants to have discussions with Indonesia and other neighboring countries on efforts to prevent drug trade. "Australia is a victim of the drug trafficking as well," Bishop said. "There are other broader regional issues that need to be addressed," Bishop added.
Bishop's expressed her comment after Australian Defense Minister Kevin Andrews criticized Indonesia for two Australian citizens for conducting drug trade. "This is a serious miscalculation on behalf of the president of Indonesia," said Andrews.
Canberra recalled its ambassador to Indonesia after two Australians, Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan, were executed by a firing squad on the early hours of Wednesday, April 29, 2015, along with six other drug convicts.
