Observer: Ahok Violates Law for Allowing Private Cars on Bus Lane

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation observer from the University of Indonesia Ellen Tangkudung said that Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama’s plan to allow private cars on Transjakarta bus lane would violate the law.
“If Ahok is trying to generate money in this way, [he] would violate the law on public transportations,” Ellen told Tempo on Friday, January 2015.
According to Ellen, Law Number 22/2009 on public transportations clearly states that the Transjakarta bus lanes are only made for mass public transportations. In addition, Ellen viewed that Ahok should focus on the plan to put the Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) system in effect.
“The ERP should be enough to boost regional revenue for double-decker bus procurement,” she added.
Ellen also reminded Ahok that public would want to get on public transportations easily, particularly in rush hours. If Transjakarta lanes were to be used by private cars, it would be difficult to meet public’s expectation.
