Fossil of Prehistoric Buffalo Discovered in Gunung Kidul

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A fossil of prehistoric buffalo Bovidae was found in the at the delta of Oya River, Sokoliman, Bejiharjo Village, Karangmojo's District, Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta.


“The findings are in the form of joint, front femur, and jaw,” said the Head of Yogyakarta Archaeological Center Siswanto to Tempo through short message service on Friday, January 23.


The fossil was found by Bambang Sukito a resident of Ngringin hamlet in the mid December 2014 when he was diggig out for agate stones on the riverbank nearby Pindul Cave. Analysis on the fossil has just finished in January, 2015.


According to Siswanto, the specimen is aged around 800,000 to 1 million years old. Earlier, a fossil of Homo erectus was also unearthed from around Pindul Cave that dates back to 1.6 million years old. The similar fossil had also been found in Sangiran Site, Central Java.


"The fossil can tell a lot about prehistorical animals in the region," Siswanto said.


The fossils are currently stored for further research at the Yogyakarta Archaeological Center.
