TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government has spent a total of Rp5.8 trillion (US$483.3 million), managed by the Sidoarjo Mudflow Mitigation Agency (BPLS), to address the impact of Lapindo mudflow disaster.
BPLS spokesperson Dwinanto Hesti Prasetyo said the fund was used to finance BPLS operational to direct the mudflow to Porong River that straightly carried the mud to Madura Strait. The BPLS also used the fund to relocate roads, build levees and maintain Porong River.
In addition, the BPLS built Kendo Bendo levee to contain Lapindo mudflow. The levee construction, which cost Rp15 billion (US$1.25 million), was started in December 2014.
Earlier, the BPLS proposed Rp9.53 trillion (US$794.1 million) to mitigate Lapindo mudflow for the period of 2008-2014. However, the government approved Rp5.8 trillion.
The BPLS has proposed Rp750 billion (US$62.5 million) to continue the existing programs.
“There will be no new programs. We will continue to address the affected area, maintain Porong River, and build levees,” Dwinanto said.
