Jamaican Authorities Arrest Venezuelan Man for Smuggling Attempt

TEMPO.CO, Montega - The Court of Montega Bay, Jamaica, sentenced a Venezuelan to 3 months of imprisonment for smuggling a large sum of money out of the country in his stomach.
The Financial Investigation Division (FID) of Venezuela reported that Eddy Alberio Mencipe Ortega was arrested last January 20, 2014. The 40 year old man was arrested at the Sangster International airport before his Caribbean Airlines flight to Trinidad and Tobago depart.
Airport security officials were suspicious of Ortega's who claimed to have a stomachache. He was then escorted to the Cornwall Regional Hospital where during his examination, officials found 80 plastic bags containing money with a total value of US$103.500.
Chief of FID's Technical Division Justin Felice, said that Ortega may be a small part of an international money laundering syndicate. He also said that this was the first time the FID encountered a money smuggling attempt where the suspect puts the money inside his stomach.
