TEMPO.CO, Surakarta - The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Industry has proposed Surakarta to be nominated as a creative city to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Mari Elka Pangestu, said that the application has been submitted to UNESCO. "The announcement is in October. We hope Solo will be chosen as design-based creative city," she said when visiting the Klewer Market on Monday, June 23, 2014.

She believed that Surakarta is superior in the field of design, especially in batik design, which is not limited on classic patterns, but explores modern patterns. "I just saw batik with lobster pattern on it. I don't think there's something like that before," she said.

Mari said that contemporary patterns will keep batik alive and improving. She said that she visited Klewer Market because she wanted to see how home industries and traditional industries could expand their businesses.
