TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Transport Agency chief Muhammad Akbar said the planned application of no-motorbike zone aimed at supporting the implementation of the electronic road pricing [ERP] system, adding that the ERP did not regulate motorbikes.
“Whereas motorbikes have been the largest contributor to traffic accidents and congestion,” he said on Monday, April 7, 2014. Akbar said this was among the reasons why the movement of motorbikes should be curbed.
Akbar said one of the options to respond to this was by barring motorbikes from entering the ERP zone and channeled them to an alternative route. The ERP will be implemented on Jl. Sudirman-M.H. Thamrin and Jl. Rasuna Said.
“We are still looking into this prohibition but we have to restrict the movement of motorbikes,” he said, adding that there would be a trial for this plan. “We also have to think about the compensation if we prohibit motorbikes from entering the zone,” he said.
Jakarta Deputy Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama said the prohibition would first be enforced on Jl. Sudirman, which would become one of those roads affected by ERP and the Mass Rapid Transit project.
