Govt to Build New Prisons in 2014

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Law and Human Rights Minister Denny Indrayana said on Wednesday his ministry has already received funds for the construction and renovation of state penitentiaries amounting to Rp1 trillion.


"We just need to wait for the final proposal," he said.


The funds will be used increase the capacity of the nation’s already over populated prisons. The proposal will include priority prisons to be constructed or renovated in 2014.


Denny said Indonesia’s prisons are currently 75 percent over capacity. These new and renovated prisons are crucial to overcome the nation’s prison crisis.


Law and Human Rights Minister Amir Syamsudin previously said there were approximately 162,000 inmates inprisons across the nation. The new additional penitentiaries will enable prisons to increase their capacity to up to a total of 13,500 inmates.
