TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Mass Rapid Transit Project is ready to roll after the signing of a contract between MRT Jakarta with two consortiums contractors. Next, the capital is going to pursue the monorail project. Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo, also known as Jokowi, said that the documents needed to continue with the monorail project will soon be signed.
"I want them to be signed by the middle of this month. Yesterday, I have read the approval draft to proceed with the project," Jokowi told Tempo on Thursday, June 13. The governor said that the draft only requires minor changes before it can be signed.
The rail-based public transportation project was started during Governor Sutiyoso's administration. Unfortunately, the project was stalled. The monorail poles that had been built now stand abandoned, used as a place for people to put up ad posters.
In its blueprint, the monorail project is planned to have a line from Jakarta to Tangerang- Karawaci and to Bekasi-Cikarang. However Jokowi said that any cross-city route must be approved through a Presidential Regulation first.
