TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Bank Indonesia West Java and Banten Region VI Director Dian Ediana Rae said that there are indications that West Java may be one of the centers for counterfeit money distribution. The indication was evident from the rampant report on counterfeit money, however insignificant the amount was. "We don't want to take risks, we need to maintain confidence over Rupiah," said Dian on Monday, May 27.

The West Java's 2013 First Trimester Regional Economic Review stipulated that there were 6,149 sheets of counterfeit money with the total of Rp 429.88 million. Most of the counterfeit money comes in Rp 50,000 banknotes at 3,085 sheets or 50.17 percent; followed by Rp 100,000 banknotes at Rp 2,706 sheets or 44.01 percent of the total counterfeit money found.

The amount of fake bills has dropped compared to the fourth trimester of 2012 where 10,302 fake banknotes were found with the total of Rp 865.02 million. During that period, most of the fake banknotes came in Rp 100,000 bills at 7,116 sheets, followed by Rp 50,000 bills at 3,022 sheets.
