TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The savanna at Mount Bromo in the National Parks of Bromo Tengger Semeru (TNBTS), East Java, is recovering. The area is starting to see more greens after a fire broke out last September, caused by flares used in a prewedding photo session.

The information was confirmed by the Team Leader of Public Relations Evaluation TNBTS Hendra in Malang, on October 15. He stated that the majority of the impacted field in the area has been seeing the growth of vegetation through the natural succession process.

"Majority of the area has been seeing a dominant growth of grass and fern," he said.

Despite this fact, several impacted areas are still scorched. Hendra said these areas will be planted with trees soon. TNBTS is still preparing a lot of tools including the seed that will become the endemic vegetation in the area.

TNBTS recorded the estimated loss caused by the fire to be Rp8.3 billion, with the total of impacted areas to be 989 hectares. The details of this loss are Rp216 million from the fire with Rp3.26 billion for the ecosystem recovery approach, and the devastation of closing down Mount Bromo temporarily reaches Rp4.87 billion.

The tourist sites in Mount Bromo were closed temporarily post-fire and have been reopened since September 19, 2023. Hendra mentioned that the number of tourists visiting the area has increased. "Around 80 to 90 percent of the total daily quota (2,700 visitors)," he said. Mount Bromo is one of the top tourist destination in East Java, seeing about 318,919 tourists in 2022 alone.
