Jokowi Calls for ASEAN Members to Help Solve Rakhine Crisis

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In his speech at the 33rd ASEAN Summit in Singapore, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo called for ASEAN countries to be actively involved in the humanitarian crisis currently plaguing Rakhine State, Myanmar.
“Back in the year 1967, when other regions in the world were divided and fastened in the power struggle of two superpower states, ASEAN leaders agreed to unite and create a peaceful and prosperous region,” said President Jokowi yesterday at the Suntec Convention Center in Singapore.
Jokowi asserted the need of having ASEAN countries to commit with fellow members upon maintaining peace and prosperity in the region as a large family. However, in reality, the Rakhine State crisis continues.
“As a family member, Indonesia hopes that there will be a step forward upon finding a solution for the matter,” said the seventh Indonesian President.
President Jokowi maintained that Indonesia is ready to play its role to which he expressed his positivity that ASEAN would also help the Myanmar government upon creating a helpful environment at Rakhine State where freedom of movement is respected, eliminating discrimination, and presenting inclusive developments.
