TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 5.6 Magnitude earthquake hits West Sumba, Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara at 02:25 am on Tuesday, May 29, 2018. The epicenter was 57 km west from Waikahaka city.
“Its epicenter located at 9.39 degrees due south (LS) and 118.45 due to East (BT) with a depth of 20 kilometers,” said the spokesman of Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BKMG) Harry Djatmiko in the written statement on Tuesday. He also said that the quake does not have a tsunami potential.
According to Head of Earthquake and Tsunami Section BMKG Rachmat Triyono, the quake classified as shallow due to the fault activity in the seabed. The result of BMKG analysis stated that the earthquake in the location was generated by strike-slip fault.
“The earthquake is III-IV MMI intensity scale,” said Rachmat based on BMKG’s shakemap conclusion and the report.
BMKG stated that there is no aftershock following and urged people to remain calm after the earthquake.
