TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Merapi erupted again on early Thursday, May 24, at 02:56 local times. "The eruption column reached up to 6,000 meters for 4 minutes and that heard from all observation posts," as quoted in the official Twitter account of the Institute for Research and Technology Development of Geological Disaster (BPPTKG) today.
In the past week, Mount Merapi has experienced phreatic eruption several times. Two phreatic eruptions occurred on Wednesday, May 23, each at 3:31 am for four minutes with a 2,000-meter eruption column and at 13:49 pm for two minutes, the height of eruption column was not visible due to fog.

BPPTKG assessed the activity of Mount Merapi which recently experienced many phreatic eruptions was almost the same as the activity post big eruption in 1872.
"The current condition is similar to the post big eruption in 1872 and in around 1930. The last big eruption occurred in 2010," said BPPTKG Head of Mount Merapi Division Agus Budi Santoso as quoted by Antara in Yogyakarta, Wednesday, May 23.
