TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Jusuf Kalla said that the Indonesian government is prepared to retaliate if United States President Donald J. Trump implements a trade war policy.
“If he blocks our crude palm oils from entering the United States, then we will reduce our US soybean and wheat imports. How many Boeing planes have we purchased from them?” said VP Kalla on Thursday, March 8.
Jusuf Kalla asserted that Donald Trump is currently facing reactions from the international community for introducing trade war policies in the name of protecting the US industry. The US government recently imposed a 25 percent import tariff for steel imports and 10 percent tariff for aluminum.
“This will be a problem in the future if Trump’s trade war gets out of hand. Many countries may attempt to retaliate their policies in the agriculture sector,” said Jusuf Kalla.
Meanwhile, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati reminded upon the dangers of trade war following US’ steel and aluminum tariff.
“The world’s history has shown that it can potentially cost us the world’s economy if trade war takes place,” said Sri Mulyani.
