Jakarta Braces for Floods as Katulampa Dam on Highest Alert

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The water level at the Katulampa Dam in Bogor had reached 240 centimeters (cm) at 9:05 a.m. local time, as the Ciliwung River overflowed significantly following constant rains at the river's upstream area since Sunday.

The Katulampa Dam was at Alert Level 1, or the highest level, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, said in a statement on Monday.

The water level at the dam reached 220 cm at 8:30 a.m. local time and rose to 230 cm at 9 a.m. local time and 240 cm at 9:05 a.m. local time.

An alert level 1 status was announced after the water level reached above 200 cm which potentially lead to flooding in area near the Ciliwung River banks located in Bogor, Depok, and Jakarta.

The area in Bogor that are prone to flooding are: Katulampa, Sukasari, Barangsiang, Babakan Pasar, Sempur, Pabaton, Kedung Badak, and Kedung Halang. A warning has been issued to people living in those area to not go near the river.

In Jakarta, the area that are prone to flooding are: Srengseng Sawah, Rawajati, Kalibata, Pengadegan, Pejaten Timur, Kebon Baru, Bukit Duri, Balekambang, Cililitan, Bidara Cina, and Kampung Melayu.

"It is estimated that within nine hours, the flood waters will reach Manggarai sluice gate in South Jakarta," he remarked.

The volume of flood waters expected to reach Jakarta in the afternoon is estimated to reach 514,656 liters per second.

The disaster mitigation offices in Bogor and Jakarta have issued an early warning on possible flash floods. Local authorities have prepared their equipments, logistics, and personnel to handle the flooding.
