TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Celebrities, public figures, and the general individuals who commit suicide are one of the human tragedies that took the public`s attention in 2017. 

People can be driven to commit suicide as a direct result of depression that they were going through. Sadly, almost 800 deaths from suicide take place each year, which averages to one suicide for every 40 seconds.

Here are five suicide cases that shocked the public in 2017:

1. Chester Bennington

Chester Charles Bennington was an American singer, songwriter, and actor. He was best known as the lead singer for the rock band Linkin Park. Before Chester committed suicide on Thursday, July 20, at the age of 41, he was known to be struggling with drugs and alcohol addiction.

2. Chris Cornell

Chris Cornell was an American musician, singer, and songwriter, who was known best for his role as the lead vocalist for Soundgarden and Audioslave. He was found dead in his hotel room, who police deemed as a suicide after performing in a Soundgarden concert in front of 5,200 audience members at the Fox Theatre in Detroit, Michigan, on Wednesday evening of May 15.

3. Johannes Marliem

Johannes Marliem

Founder of Biomorf Lone LLC, Johannes Marliem shook the Indonesian political realm after claiming that he had kept 500GB of conversation records regarding the infamous e-KTP or electronic ID graft case that allegedly involved several Indonesian State Officials. He was found dead with a head injury at his house in Los Angeles on August 10. The local authority stated that Marliem was committed suicide.

4. Pahinggar Indrawan

Pahinggar Indrawan (50) was not a public figure, but what made his death so shocking was because he broadcasted his suicide via Facebook Live recording from his personal account. In the video, he explained the reason why he was driven into committing suicide on Friday, March 17.

He sadly recounted the reason he did it, it was because his wife who he deeply loved left him and their children. Pahinggar revealed that he broadcasted it so that it could be a memento for his wife.

5. Jonghyun SHINee

Lead vocalist for South Korean pop band Shinee, Jonghyun, was found unconscious in his apartment on the floor between the bed and the table by the police and emergency dispatchers. According to various news sources, investigators believe he died from inhaling either toxic fumes or smoke, as they discovered coal briquettes burnt in a frying pan upon arriving at the apartment. The police stated that, at the request of Jonghyun's family, a post-mortem would not be carried out, and they declared his death as a suicide.
