Hotel Owners Claim They Provide Better Service Than Airbnb

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Hotel owner association claims that hotels care more about their customers than online accommodation service provider Airbnb.
“Hotels or other official agents guarantee customer’s security and convenience,” said Vice Chairman of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) Rainier Daulay on Wednesday, November 29.
Rainier gave an example of the maximum effort of hotel management during the Mount Agung Eruption in Bali that has caused anguish upon tourists and accommodation management. “If people ordered [a room] online, through Airbnb for example, who would handle it?” he asked rhetorically.

He argues that Airbnb tends to be less regulated in determining its service standards and seems to rent rooms that are subpar such as dorm rooms or unattended apartments.
Rainier also questions the existence of Airbnb that he considers has played a part in snatching Indonesia’s hotel industry. He explained that three-star hotels and under have taken the hardest hit following the Airbnb revolution because the online room provider offers rent half the rate compared to others.
Previously reported, PHRI Chairman Hariyadi Sukmandani urged the Indonesian government to freeze the operations of application-based accommodation providers such as Airbnb since it has been proven to take down hotel occupancies.
