TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The House of Representatives (DPR) will summon the National Armed Forces (TNI) Commander General Gatot Nurmantyo and the National Intelligence Agency (BIN) chief Budi Gunawan over alleged illegal arms deals.
“It has become a hot potato. Therefore, the Commission I plans to summon the TNI commander and BIN chief,” DPR member Supiandi Aries Putra.
The National Democrat Party politician said that Gatot would never issue a baseless statement. However, he said that the issue should be resolved to avoid controversy.
“Statements have been issued by [chief security minister] Wiranto and the TNI commander; I hope the issue will be resolved soon to avoid unrest among the people,” he said.
Aries said that BIN’s did not violate the rule by issuing a purchase order of 500 guns from state-owned arms maker PT Pindad. He reasoned that the agency will use the guns to train new recruits.
The controversy arises after a viral video showing TNI Commander General Gatot Nurmantyo made a statement in front of retired military generals and active soldiers that an institution had planned to purchase 5,000 guns using President Joko Widodo’s name.
