TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The number of osteoarthritis patients grows in number by the year. It is recorded that 12 percent of Indonesian female population aged 65 and older suffers from the disease. Meanwhile, 15 percent of male aged 65 and older has the same disease.
Osteoarthritis is a disease related to damage to cartilage joints. This disease attacks any joints, but it dominantly attacks knee and ankle joints.
“Osteoarthritis commonly afflicts senior citizens at the age of 65 and older. However, not all senior citizens suffer this disease. It depends on their lifestyle,” Orthopedic specialist of Siloam TB Simatupang Hospital dr Dwi Purnomo Setyo Budi SpOT said in Jakarta on Saturday (2/9).
In a health seminar entitled Joint Health and Osteoarthritis held on 26 August, she explained that the main cause of this disease includes aging, trauma, obesity, and genetics. Obese senior citizens tend to be inflicted by osteoarthritis. While for those who are thin, they rarely suffer from this disease unless they experience a trauma, for instance experiencing anaccident that caused injury to joints.
