TEMPO.CO, Natuna - Minister Susi Pudjiastuti said the name changing of South China Sea into North Natuna Sea is a sign of Indonesia`s sovereignty.
“We will continue to use that name. It is our pride and victory,” said the Maritime Affairs and Fishery Minister during her visit to the Integrated Maritime and Fishery Center (SKPT) in Natuna on Monday, August 7.
The move to change the name was protested and considered to be irrational by China. They argue that it is not in accordance with the attempts to standardize international regions.

China has been defending the name of South China Sea in areas owned by other nations. For example, when the Philippines decided to change the region’s name into the West Philippine Sea, China brought the case to the international court.
Susi said that most of Indonesia’s borders are located on the sea and it is impossible for the government to build a border wall. But the government can show efforts to preserve the country’s surrounding sea.
"If we’re not consistent, our laws can be bought, authorities can be bribed. Permits can be traded, that would be the end of it. Anyone with the money can buy this country. Therefore, we must collectively protect,” said Minister Susi Pudjiastuti.
