TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Government needs to optimize technological advancement as a solution to enhance productivity of salt commodity that has shown a decline despite the increasing number of salt embankments every year.
"The poor condition of salt production in Indonesian requires immediate correction by providing low-cost technological intervention for salt production and processing," the People's Coalition for Fisheries Justice (KIARA) secretary general Susan Herawati Romica said in Jakarta on Saturday(29/7).
Susan believes that government’s plan to import salt for consumption will not solve the crisis. She added that such a plan is an instant policy overlooking the fact that local salt harvest will begin on July 2017.
In addition, East Java Governor Soekarwo expected modification or utilization of salt production technology to generate better quality and to anticipate salt scarcity due to weather condition.
"We hope the central government can find a technology-based solution to salt production," he said in Surabaya on Thursday (27/7).
