BPS : Inflation in May Stands at 0.39 Percent

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) today announced that the inflation rate in May 2017 stood at 0.39 percent with the Consumer Price Index (IHK) stood at 128.83.
BPS head Suhariyanto explained that as many as 70 cities experienced inflation, while 12 others had deflation.

“Prices are increasing, and the inflation rate in May 2017 stood at 0.38 percent,” Suharianto said during a press conference at his office on Friday, June 2.

With an inflation rate of 0.39 percent in May, the month-on-month inflation rate stands at 1.67 percent, and the year-on-year inflation rate stands at 4.33 percent.

Suhariyanto explained that May inflation rate was caused by increasing prices as reflected by rises in all spending indexes. Several commodities experiencing price hikes in May 2017 included garlic, electricity, broiler chicken egg, broiler chicken meat, gasoline, air transportation tariff, rice, beef, and others. Meanwhile, commodities such as cayenne pepper, green chilies, red onion, tomato, white sugar and cellphone credit.

In May 2017, most spending groups contributed to the inflation include food (0.17 percent); processed food, beverage, cigarette, and tobacco (0.06 percent); and housing, water electricity, gas and fuel (0.09 percent). Clothing contributed 0.01 percent to the inflation rate, as well as health at 0.02 percent and transportation, communication, financial service at 0.04 percent.

“Meanwhile, education, recreation, and sport did not contribute to the national inflation rate,” Suharianto said.
