Jakarta Allows Homeless People to Live in Subsidized Apartments

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta regional secretary Saefullah said that homeless residents are allowed to live in low-cost apartments built by the Jakarta administration.

According to Saefullah, the administration will continue to move poor people to low-cost apartments. Saefullah explained that low-cost apartments are not only made available for residents evicted from certain areas.

This year, the city administration has already moved 340 families to Marunda and Rawa Bebek apartments. Saefullah believes that the figure is likely to increase, and the will prioritize the poor residents to occupy low-cost apartments.

“Low-cost apartments in Rawa Bebek are ready to be occupied. There will be new low-cost apartments in Marunda as well,” he said.

In December last year, the administration completed the construction of 22 new low-cost apartment towers. The apartments were built for evicted residents and residents living below the poverty line.

The construction of low-cost apartments is the main priority of Jakarta administration, as the city has allocated most of its budget to build the apartments. It is expected that the number of low-cost apartment buildings will continue to increase each year.
