TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s food and beverage industry (F&B) grew by 9.82 percent or Rp192.69 trillion in the third quarter of 2016, Director General of Agro-industry, the Industry Ministry, Panggah Susanto said.
“Food and beverage industry plays a strategic role in the supply of safe, nutritious, quality instant consumption products,” Panggah said on Thursday in a written statement, as quoted by Antara news agency.
Panggah conveyed the message in the CEO Gathering of the Indonesian Food & Beverage Association (GAPMMI) in Jakarta.
According to him the industry’s growth has been boosted by the upper middle class’s preference to consume hygienic, natural foods.
As such, the industry should adopt sound food processing and safety management system, include selection of raw ingredients, processing, packaging, distribution and sales.
“The sector is very strategic and has a bright prospect for growth,” Panggah said.
Food and beverage industry was the largest contributor to gross domestic product (GDP) outside oil and gas, reaching 33.6 percent in the third quarter of 2016.
Realization of investment in F&B industry in Q3 of 2016 was 1.6 billion dollars, comprising both local and foreign investments.
“We expect GAPMMI and its members to continue to work hard and cooperate with the Government to achieve the growth of the industry which continues to be maintained and improved,” Panggah said.
GAPMMI chairman Adhi S. Lukman said that he is optimistic that the F&B import will keep getting better next year and emulate the 2015 export volume.
“To boost performance, we continue to explore possibilities to enter non-traditional export destinations. Moreover, opportunities for halal product will also play its part,” he said.
