TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta International School has protested a sudden night search of the school building by the Jakarta Police. “We are shocked and disturbed,” said JIS spokesperson Daniati Wusono on Saturday.
JIS said it respected the rights of the police to continue the investigation, but deemed the night search unnecessary as JIS had always been open to the police.
Daniati claimed there was no prior notification to JIS or the school’s lawyer about the seafch. Moreover, she added, a member of the school board was not allowed to monitor the search.
JIS was shocked that the police brought the mother and her son who became a victim of the sexual abuse case at the school. “We are really disturbed that the police allowed the mother to be participated in the search.” The mother is suing JIS for US$125 million over alleged sexual abuse against her son by the school's janitors.
Daniati hoped the investigation would be carried out fairly and transparently based on due process of law principle.
Some 20 investors from the Jakarta Police searched JIS in Cilandak, South Jakarta, last Friday night. The search, which lasted until Saturday, sought to discover new evidence based on investigation reports. The police found 11 items related to pedophilia acts at JIS.
