TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The movie titled Achilles and the Tortoise by eccentric Japanese director Takeshi Kitano has just recently screened at Taman Ismail Marzuki in Jakarta. One by one, people started to come out of the theater while enthusiastically talking and joking around. They also began to take out drawing tools even though the clock already showed it was 22.00 local time.
Various drawing tools were sprawled on the table: color pencils, waterpaint, brushes, and black markers. Sixteen members of the Gambar Selaw community then cheerfully started to draw while kidding with one another. They were free to draw whatever they wanted, just as long as it had something to do with the movie.
Tiffany, one of the founders of the community along with Ricky Malaw, Reza Azer, and Djarot, stated that this community was united by one interest: drawing. They all had various professions. Ricky, aside from being an illustrator, is also a local soap actor and radio announcer. Djarot and Reza are both graphic designers and illustrators. Tiffany works in a travel agency and is also a graphic designer. This group of four gradually started to grow and currently has 20 members.
Tiffany revealed that their similar hobby and passion, drawing, was based on their desire to relieve themselves from daily routines and exhaustion. She also revealed their secret as to why they gather every Thursday night. "A feng shui expert in Kramat Sentiong said that Thursday night is a good night," she said. If they held gatherings on Friday night, everyone would be busy with their own activities for the weekend.
Their interest in drawing indirectly resulted in them sharing experiences and tips enabling them to experiment with new methods of drawing.
