TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) deputy chairman Zainut Tauhid Sa'ad said the status of Ma’ruf Amin as MUI chief is formally non-active after the General Election Commission (KPU) recognized him as a vice presidential candidate.
“Since KPU announces him [Ma’ruf Amin] as the vice presidential candidate, he is [now] nonactive from leading MUI,” said Zainut in a written statement received by Tempo today, August 29.
Zainut said the decision was initiated by Ma’ruf Amin so he can focus on his candidacy. Ma’ruf would accompany Jokowi in the 2019 presidential election.
He added that Ma’ruf did not want his position triggered pros and cons either among the community or the internal body.
Zainul went on to say that MUI is now currently led by two deputies, himself and Yunahar Ilyas, in a bid to maintain its work.
Today afternoon, August 29, MUI Advisory Council would hold a closed plenary meeting regarding the leadership status of Ma’ruf Amin at the MUI building, Jakarta.
