TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) deputy chief Saut Situmorang said that the anti-graft agency does not need President Joko Widodo’s approval to examine House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Setya Novanto. He said that the case is similar to when the KPK named Regional Representatives Council (DPD) Speaker Irman Gusman a suspect in a bribery case.

“No [approval is] need” Saut said today at an event called Consitution and Anti-Corruption Festival in the University of Indonesia in Depok.

Setya Novanto today failed to show up in the electronic identity cards (e-KTP) graft trial. The House Speaker was summoned to testify for a defendant named Anang Sugiana. The KPK received a letter explaining that Setya will not attend the trial.

The KPK spokesman Febri Diansyah explained that the letter was signed by Setya Novanto himself, stating that the President’s approval is needed to question the House Speaker.

Setya Novanto is currently visiting Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara. He told reporters that he will be focusing on performing his job as a statesman and the chairman of Functional Group (Golkar) Party.
