TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bali Governor I Made Mangku Pastika is confused with a higher number of refugees after Bali volcano Mt. Agung was declared on the highest alert. He is concerned that if the number keeps increasing, government and disaster mitigation team cannot handle the refugees.
Based on a map of disaster-prone areas, Pastika said, around 70,000 residents of 27 villages are required to displace. However, the number has hit more than 144,000. They are spread across nine regencies/cities and most take shelter in the sports center, emergency tents, community halls and independent refuge shelters.

Pastika suspected that residents from areas around the disaster-prone areas also displaced. As a result, he has coordinated with disaster mitigation team to send home those people.
"Those who are required to displace are those who reside in disaster-prone areas 1, 2, 3.” He said on Friday, Sept. 29. “The people who reside in other areas than areas 1, 2, 3 will be sent home in the course of a week."
The Bali Governor guarantees the safety of people residing out of the prone areas. “I guarantee it is safe,” he declared. “If eruption takes place, then safety measures will be taken."
