Indonesia Asks Denmark, Norway to Develop Malacca Strait

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi has encouraged Danish and Norwegian firms to join hands in developing marine transport infrastructure in Indonesia.
To achieve it, the Transportation Minister at the Marine and Fisheries Minister building in Jakarta on Monday, November 28, issued a decree on the establishment of a financing team for investment in the transportation sector.
“Denmark and Norway are home to the world’s leading shipping companies. Therefore, we encourage them to develop the Malacca Strait and invest in marine navigation,” he said, as quoted by Antara.
Transportation Ministry will assign an Indonesian State-Owned Enterprise (SEO) to cooperate with Danish and Norwegian firms in developing Malacca Strait.
He went on to say that he expects sailing in the Malacca Strait to run smoothly in order to help maintain sovereignty and water security as well as environmental sustainability.
The event was held by Marine and Fisheries Ministry in association with Transportation Ministry and Danish and Norwegian Embassies.
Also present in the event was Norwegian Ambassador to Indonesia Stig Traavik and Danish Ambassador to Indonesia Casper Klynge.
In addition, 33 Danish and Norwegian firms also attended the event, offering business collaboration and investment to the Indonesian Government and business owners as well as SOEs.
The event also saw the signing of the agreement between Transportation Ministry and Marine and Fisheries Ministry in a bid to tackle illegal fishing through reinforcement of national fishery fleet program.
