Indonesia, Netherlands Agree to Fight Illegal Fishing

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesia government continues its bilateral cooperation in marine and fisheries with the Dutch government by singing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Indonesian Marine and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti and Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Lilianne Ploumen.

The signing was made on the sidelines of a bilateral meeting between the two countries at the State Palace, witnessed by Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, the Fisheries Ministry press release stated on Thursday, as quoted by Bisnis Indonesia.

The MoU is aimed at forming a framework for improved cooperation in marine and fisheries based on the principles of equality, mutual respect, trust and benefit.

The cooperation under the MoU include eradication of Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing; sustainable development of fishery; development of fishery processing industry and marketing; exchange of marine and fishery information, data and technology; fish quarantine, inspection and certification; capacity building, training and technical assistance; as well as exchange of human capital.

Marine and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti has welcomed the cooperation between Indonesia and the Netherlands in marine and fisheries. Susi said that cooperation in marine and fishery sector could be developed further between the two countries.

Based on the agreement, Indonesian Marine and Fisheries Ministry and Dutch Economic Ministry have agreed to kick off a pilot project on Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) e-certificate for fish and fish products and the exchange thereof. Also to implement recommendation from the United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business (UN/CEFACT) on digital evidence to anticipate papperless certification as well as to jointly promote digital facilities for trade in fish and fish products.
