TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) advisory board deputy chairman Din Syamsuddin said that the rumors of coup attempt at peaceful rally planned for December 2 have been blown out of proportion. Even if it’s true, Din said, the government should prove it.
“It is possible for some to have such intention [to overthrow government] in this great nation, but it must be proven,” Din said Wednesday at Mercure Hotel in Ancol, North Jakarta.
Din said he had little knowledge of such rumors. However, he expressed that protestors would disapprove of any attempt to take advantage of the planned December 2 rally.
“Whoever it might be, however powerful, any attempt to overthrow a legitimate government [led by] Jokowi, will be denied by the protesters. It is not the issue we would like to raise,” Din said.
He also warns against possible incitement in the upcoming rally. He said that MUI, and two Indonesia’s largest Islamic organization, Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah, as well as other Muslim organizations will be against any attempt to bring down the Government.
Nevertheles, Din has urged the Government to seriously resolve the blasphemy case involving Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama alias Ahok. “If the Government is not serious, more so after securing relevant evidence, it would spark mass outrage,” he said.
