TEMPO.CO, Jakarta-The Police of Pagedangan, Tangerang are investigating the cause of the collapsed roof at the Aeon Mall, Bumi Serpong Damai on Wednesday night.
"We are still investigating," Pagedangan Police Comm. Endang Sukmawijaya said on Thursday, April 12, 2016.
Aeon Mall's canopy, which was made from membrane, collapsed on Wednesday afternoon, unable to withstand the heavy-pouring rain. Fourteen people including the mall's visitors and cleaning staff suffered injuries from broken glasses and other objects that fell off the roof. The victims were immediately taken to Eka Hospital.
Endang said the investigation includes questioning witnesses and the management of Aeon Mall. The police cannot say whether the roof collapsed due to construction errors or because of bad weather. The roof collapsed during a heavy rain on Wednesday.
For the time being, the police suspect that the membrane broke because it could not accommodate the volume of water when heavy rains washed Serpong and its surrounding areas yesterday.
The Tangerang regional government is also investigating the incident.
"A supervisor team from the Department of Human Settlements is inspecting the location," Tangerang Regent Ahmed Zaki Iskandar said.
