TEMPO.CO, Jakarta-Transportation Minister Ignasius Jonan said many countries ban the operation of Uber Taxi as it does not meet the official transportation requirement in the countries.
“There have been much opposition [in other countries], but some finally gave permission by applying several requirements,” Jonan said at the Commission V Parliament Meeting in Jakarta on Monday, April 11, 2016.
In the US, Uber is applied with similar laws as in other countries, including the insurance and registration of the driver’s background. While Uber in France is prohibited since it does not meet the requirements to operate in the country.
“In Germany, Uber does not meet the requirements for the establishment of public transportation enterprises,” said Jonan.
In South Korea and Victoria state of Australia, Uber drivers are obliged to perform accreditation and licensing tests.
“In Belgium, Uber is considered illegal and fined for 10,000 euros,” he added.
In Indonesia, Uber and Grab Car taxi have violated Regulation No.22/2009 on Road Transport Traffic, citing that the transportation companies are unincorporated, not gaining permit for organization transport, not running the vehicle testing, and not using public transport vehicle ID and the driver does not own a general A-license.
“We suggest that Uber and Grab to collaborate with registered public transportation enterprises,” the Minister said.
Jonan said the Transportation Ministry has reached an agreement with both companies to legalize their management until May 31, 2016 by cooperating with official transportation companies.
