TEMPO.CO, Bandung - Basket cakes (kue keranjang) or dodol china, the dark brown cake with a distinct palm sugar aroma, are identical to Chinese New Year (Imlek) celebration in most regions in Indonesia. This year, there is new green variant of the cake that spread out sweet pandan aroma.
“Although it has previously existed on the market, we only started to produce it this year and it gets warm welcome. So that there is not only palm sugar variant,” said Vincent, the owner of Tek Kie cake shop when met at the production house in Bandung on Wednesday, January 27.
For now, the pandan basket cakes attract less customers compared to the regular one. Vincent said that he only produces 2 tons of the green cake per day while there is 21 tons of brown cakes are produced per day. A 500-gram of pandan basket cake is sold at Rp20,000.
the sweet-chewy cake is favorited not only by Chinese ethnic but also people from other ethnic. Eni Sumaryani, for example, bought a few of the cake to be enjoyed by her family.
“It tastes like fried banana, sweet and savory,” said Eni who usually fries the cake with wheat powder.
The cake is made into round shape that symbolize endless prosperity. Chinese people buy the cake to be given to their friends and family.
