TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta- Yogyakarta Environment Agency (BLH) predicted that air pollution in tourist destination Malioboro would increase drastically during Eid holiday season. The pollution, which results from motor vehicles’ exhaust gases, may rise up to three to five times higher than the normal threshold.
“This year’s Lebaran happens during the dry season, and Malioboro has minimum green spaces while it is packed with vehicles,” said BLH Yogyakarta’s Head of Environment Recovery Sub-unit, Pieter Lawoasal to Tempo on Friday, July 10.
In normal busy hours, Carbon Monoxide level in Maloboro is between 30,000 and 42,000 microgram per day, while lead level is around 2 ppm.
To minimize the rise on pollution level, BLH recommends to reduce traffic congestion by applying road-closing/opening during busy hours, especially starting from 10.00 local time. Parking area are also suggested to be distributed outside Malioboro.
