Trade Ministry to Add Beef Import Quota

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government is set to add beef import quota, reaching 29,000 cows, in the second quarter of 2015. Director General of Trade at the Ministry of Trade, Partogi Pangaribuan, said that it is to anticipate the coming Eid celebration.
“The permit license was issued to maintain price stability,” said Partogi.
Previously, Trade Minister has issued import license of 250,000 cows for the second quarter of 2015. The ministry will also issue license for 'secondary cut beef' or 'frozen beef', mostly used as rendang’s ingredients.
Based on data from the Association of Indonesian Meat and Feedlot Producer, Indonesia needs up to 640,000 tons of beef this year. The number escalates 8.5 percent compare to last year. It is also equal to 3.4 million cows, which is only eligible at 2.3 million.
