TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Presidential fact-finding team (Team 9) deputy chairman Jimly Asshiddiqie is planning to propose a limited impunity for KPK leaders to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo. According to Jimly, the move will prevent KPK commissioners from being criminalized.

Jimly said on Monday, February 2, 2015, that the impunity would not be permanent and only apply when KPK commissioners serve their terms of office. The impunity, he added, would be a consequence of corruption eradication efforts that were frequently stymied by bureaucracy.

Jimly further explained that the impunity would not establish KPK’s superiority nor make its commissioners untouchable by the law. Instead, the impunity would provide them with better access to serve their task in eradicating corruption.

Jimly admitted there were no such things as flawless individuals at the KPK. He said the problem was that the imperfection was frequently raised when the corruption eradication efforts were intensified. Jimly also called on President Jokowi to take firm action to prevent KPK leaders from being criminalized.

“The investigation [of the cases that involves KPK commissioners] should wait until their terms of office end, so that it won't hamper [corruption eradication efforts],” he said.
