TEMPO.CO, Den Haag - Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has arrived in The Hague for a trial at the International Criminal Court, where he faces charges of crimes against humanity. Kenyatta was brought before the ICC for allegations that he helped instigate violence that followed Kenya's December 2007 presidential election, when more than 1,000 people were killed.
According to Al-Jazeera, the court had ordered Kenyatta to attend the status hearing today, denying his request that he participates by video. Thus, Kenyatta became the first sitting president to appear before the ICC, amid protests from Kenyatta’s supporters.
At the moment, Kenyatta has temporarily handed over the power to Deputy William Ruto. The temporary measure is the president's way of fulfilling the court order to appear and insisting that he be a private citizen during the hearing.
