Thousands of Cars Netted in City Clampdown on Illegal Parking  

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Transportation Agency’s operation control director, Syafrin Liputo, said a total of 1,269 vehicles had been netted in the agency’s raids against illegal parking in the capital—sixty seven of which were towed away.

“Because the past two days [Saturday and Monday] were holidays, the raids were carried out until Friday. Thousands [of vehicles] were caught, we hope these raids will have deterrent effects on the people,” he told Tempo on Sunday, September 14, 2014. 

The agency’s clampdowns against illegal parking kicked off on Monday in the capital’s five municipalities, particularly in areas where illegal parking was most rampant: Tanah Abang in Central Jakarta, Marunda in North Jakarta, Jatinegara in East Jakarta, Kalibata in South Jakarta and Kota in West Jakarta.

Until the fifth day of the raids, the agency has snared 1,269 vehicles, with 67 cars towed away, 237 cars and 494 motorcycles had their tires’ valve stems removed, 308 vehicles ticketed by the agency and 163 others ticketed by the police.

Syafrin said the agency would alter the raids’ schedules and locations next week. “We will intensify the operations next week, not only in daylight. The pattern will be adjusted to the conditions in the field,” he said.
