TEMPO.CO, Tel Aviv - Israel has bombarded several Syrian military sites after a roadside bombing wounded four Israeli troops in the occupied Golan Heights. Israeli military said that the airstrikes launched on Wednesday, March 19, 2014, targeted a Syrian military headquarters, a training facility and artillery batteries.
Israeli military spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Peter Lerner, stated that the overnight strikes was launched as a retaliation to the bombing on Tuesday. "The targets were military facilities on the Syrian-held side of the Golan," he said.
Al Jazeera's Kimberly Halkett reported that Israel launched the attacks because it believed that the explosive device was operated from Syrian territory. Lerner had previously explained that the blast went off when a patrol squad noticed and investigated "suspicious movement" along the frontline.
Israel accused Damascus responsible for the roadside bombing despite the fact that the Syrian-held side of the Golan are controlled by rebels, including al-Qaeda militia. "We see the Syrian army as responsible, and that is indicated by our response to the attack," Lerner said.
