TEMPO.CO, Valparaiso - Michelle Bachelet has been sworn in as the president of Chile for the second time. The leader of a socialist party now officially serves as the president of the country after an inauguration ceremony in Valparaiso on Tuesday, March 11, 2014.
BBC reported the ceremony was attended by leaders from the region, including Argentina’s Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, Ecuadorean leader Rafael Correa, Peruvian president Ollanta Humala, and Bolivia’s Evo Morales.
Bachelet won the election on December 2013 over her conservative rival, Evelyn Matthei. She won 62 percent of the vote, well ahead of 38% cast for Matthei.
Bachelete campaigned on a promise to reform education, improve health care, and reduce income disparity.
