TEMPO.CO, Cairo - Journalists from networks of international media have signed a joint letter urging the release of three Al Jazeera journalists who have been jailed in Egypt’s Tora Prison since November 29 for charges of spreading false news and having links to terrorist organizations.
"We think the Egyptian authorities are profoundly mistaken in their actions," the letter states.
As reported by Al Jazeera, the letter was signed on February 18, 2014 by senior staff from BBC, NBC, ABC, ITN and Sky News.
The three imprisoned Al Jazeera journalists are Peter Greste, Mohammad Fahmi and Baher Mohammad. They were accused of working with Egyptian citizens in providing information, tools, money, spreading false news about the ongoing civil war in Egypt and using broadcasting equipment without permission.
There are currently 20 detained journalists facing charges in Egypt; 16 are Egyptians and the rest are foreigners, including two of the three Al Jazeera journalists.
