Soekarwo-Syaifullah Wins East Java Election

TEMPO.CO, Surabaya - Soekarwo and Syaifullah have been declared as the winner of the Governor and Deputy Governor election for the period of 2014 – 2019 after the East Java General Election Commission (KPU) officially announced the pair as the winner shortly after the vote counting at Shangi-La hotel, Surabaya yesterday.

"The East Java General Election Commission has declared Soekarwo and Saifullah Yusuf as the governor and deputy governor of East Java for the period of 2014-2019," said Chairman of East Java General Election Commission, Andry Dewanto Ahmad.

Voting count showed that Soekarwo-Syaifullah got 8,195,816 votes (47.25 percent), Eggi Sidjana-Moh Sihat got 422.932 votes (2.44 percent), Bambang Dwo Hartono-Said Abdullah got 2,200,069 votes (12.69 percent) and Khofifah Indar Parawansa – Herman Suryadi Sumawiredja got 6,525,015 votes (37.62 percent).

As many as 17,343,832 votes were declared valid, while 551,997 votes were not valid. Therefore, the total number of votes counted reached 17,895,809 out of 30,034,249 eligible votes.

In response to their win, Soekarwo expressed his gratitude to East Java residents and said that Indonesia has to learn from the democratization process in the province. "East Java and Indonesia must learn from the witnesses what worked in this peaceful election," he claimed.
