TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Christine Hutabarat, Corporate Secretary at ASDP Indonesia Ferry Corporation mentioned that the company prefers to import used ferries rather than building a new one in Indonesia, saying that "it can take two tho three years [to make a new one]."
Importing used ferry is far easier and faster with only four to five months timeline, and relatively cheaper. A domestically produced ferry could cost around Rp 300 to 400 billion (US$30,29 million to US$40,39 million) per unit, while an imported secondhand ferries only costs US$ 10 - 20 million.
Earlier this week, ASDP has launched Portlink, a new passenger-ship (KMP). The ship was previously named Stena Caledoina and was built in Belfast which now operates on Merak-Bakauheni route.
