TEMPO.CO, London – A report released by the United Nations revealed that consuming nutritious insects could help fight obesity and alleviate hunger.
According to the report, more than 1,900 species of insects are eaten around the world, mainly in Africa and Asia. Meanwhile, while people in the wester countries generally prefer to eat grasshoppers, termites and other crunchy insects.
The Forestry Department, part of the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), said that many insects contain the same amount of protein and minerals found in meat. This condition also cause doctors to recommend insects to be consumed during a diet.
The World Health Organization stated that the obesity rate in the world has doubled since 1980 into 500 million people. Therefore, consuming insect can be considered as a low-cost method in addressing the problem.
